Some artists don’t need big dialogues — their eyes speak for them. Naveen Nishad is one such actor whose calm intensity and theatre discipline have shaped his every frame. Belonging to Hisar, Haryana, Naveen began performing at a young age and spent over two decades immersed in theatre. “Main bachpan se theatre kar raha hoon… 22 saal ho gaye,” he recalls with pride.Before joining films, he even ran his own acting institute in Hisar.
His turning point came by chance: “Ek director ko villain chahiye tha. Mujhe aankhon se khelna tha, kuch bolna nahi tha — bas hero ko maarna tha aur chale jaana.”That silent yet powerful role in the film Pagdi: The Honour became a breakthrough. The movie, released sixteen years after Chandrawal, went on to win two National Awards and brought new respect to regional cinema. Naveen’s expression-based acting earned praise from many, even senior officers who admired how a character could speak volumes without words.
The Artist Who Never Stops Learning
Naveen’s strength lies in observation. “Main chacha, papa, bhikhari, handicap sabko dekhta tha — sabse seekhta tha,” he says. His mother was fond of singing; his father, a wrestler.
Naveen himself was once Haryana’s best NCC rifle shooter and worked as a sports teacher for five years before stepping fully into the arts.Music has always been his second language — he learned to play the guitar, harmonium, tabla, and drums, often contributing background scores to college plays in Chandigarh. “Rangmanch saari kalaon ka sangam hai,” he says thoughtfully. “Main 45 ka hoon, par seekhna kabhi band nahi kiya.”
Beyond Theatre and Film
From Pagdi to Param Sundari, Glory (directed by Anshuman Ji of Mirzapur fame), and the popular show Pushpa Impossible, Naveen’s screen presence remains sincere and grounded. His earlier stage role as Bharat in Ramleela still stays close to his heart. “Woh character ghar tak chala jaata tha,” he admits with a smile.His son has also appeared in the film Chhalaang, which makes him proud as a father and mentor. “Life teaches you who’s genuine and who’s not,” he adds. “Is industry mein koi paise nahi leta — bas seekhne ke liye dene padte hain. Aur seekhna hi sabse bada investment hai.”
A Message to Aspiring Actors
Naveen’s words to newcomers reflect his humility and hard-earned wisdom:
“Apne passion ko follow karo. Sifarish aur nepotism sirf platform dete hain, par aage badhata hai sirf imandari aur training. Director ka vision samajhna hi actor ki asli pehchaan hai.”
Deeply inspired by Kamal Haasan and Govinda, he admires how both combined skill with soul. “Kamal Haasan sir ek institution hain — unhone martial arts aur acting dono mein kamaal kiya. Govinda jaisa dancer koi nahi.”
