The Challenge of Uniting Princely States
Before Independence, India was divided between British-controlled territories and hundreds of princely states ruled by kings and nawabs. After British rule ended, these rulers had to decide whether to join India or Pakistan.
Some agreed easily, while others hesitated or wanted to remain independent.
Patel understood that a divided India could become politically and economically weak. Working closely with V. P. Menon, he used diplomacy, negotiation and the Instrument of Accession to persuade most princely states to become part of the Indian Union.
Diplomacy With Determination
Sardar Patel believed in peaceful negotiation, but he was also prepared to take firm decisions when national unity was at risk.
The integration of Junagadh and Hyderabad became two of the most challenging episodes of this process. Patel’s ability to combine patience with strong leadership helped India overcome these difficult situations.
This determination earned him the title “Iron Man of India.”
